Optimal Linear Estimation (OLE) Modeling Supports Early Holocene (9000–8000 RCYBP) Copper Tool Production in North America

چکیده

The discovery and development of metal as a tool medium is topic global interest. A fundamental research goal involves establishing the timing human experimentation with naturally occurring copper ore, which commonly associated sedentary, agrarian-based societies. However, in North America, there well-documented millennia-scale exploitation media by small, seasonally mobile hunter-gatherer groups western Great Lakes. Archaeologists have suggested that Late Paleoindian may begun using almost immediately after they entered Lake Superior basin. only few radiocarbon dates support such early use copper. Here, we optimal linear estimation modeling to infer origin date for production America. Our results show invention likely occurred shortly first pioneering populations encountered ore during Pleistocene-Holocene transition. modeled here (ca. 8100 RCYBP) reveal several important features about behavior populations. Moreover, our suggest this phenomenon represents earliest known utilitarian production.

Lake sediments record prehistoric lead pollution related to early copper production in North America.

The mining and use of copper by prehistoric people on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula is one of the oldest examples of metalworking. We analyzed the concentration of lead, titanium, magnesium, iron, and organic matter in sediment cores recovered from three lakes located near mine pits to investigate the timing, location, and magnitude of ancient copper mining pollution. Lead concentrations were n...

Spatiotemporal distribution of Holocene populations in North America.

As the Cordilleran and Laurentide Ice Sheets retreated, North America was colonized by human populations; however, the spatial patterns of subsequent population growth are unclear. Temporal frequency distributions of aggregated radiocarbon ((14)C) dates are used as a proxy of population size and can be used to track this expansion. The Canadian Archaeological Radiocarbon Database contains more ...

Decomposing the mid-Holocene Tsuga decline in eastern North America.

The mid-Holocene decline of Tsuga canadensis (hereafter Tsuga) populations across eastern North America is widely perceived as a synchronous event, driven by pests/pathogens, rapid climate change, or both. Pattern identification and causal attribution are hampered by low stratigraphic density of pollen-sampling and radiometric dates at most sites, and by absence of highly resolved, paired polle...

Late Pleistocene and early Holocene rivers and wetlands in the Bonneville basin of western North America

Field investigations at Dugway Proving Ground in western Utah have produced new data on the chronology and human occupation of late Pleistocene and early Holocene lakes, rivers, and wetlands in the Lake Bonneville basin. We have classified paleo-river channels of these ages as “gravel channels” and “sand channels.” Gravel channels are straight to curved, digitate, and have abrupt bulbous ends. ...
